Descrizione
“Rainstick Cowbell makes searing music that’s intensely personal…[from] intense, clear-eyed
rants to unhinged exorcisms. It’s exhilarating to hear music this raw.”
—Portland Mercury
With a European tour planned for Fall 2012—the fourth in four years—Rainstick Cowbell is
releasing a new late-summer album, Damage Control Damage, in 12″ vinyl (CD and download
also available).
Drawing from the same deeply emotional well as past recordings, with passion-driven acoustic
riffs and distinctly melodic voice (“an adolescent/androgynous voice that almost merits ‘freak’
status when you consider how much it belies his hairy countenance,” Terrascope) the new
album explores more sonically diverse territory. Expanded instrumentation and guest musicians
delve into twisting tales—sometimes fuming, sometimes funny, always furious—of betrayed
friendship, international atrocity, and genital abnormality.
Says singer-songwriter Scott Arbogast, “This album has some heavy-as-shit themes, but I also
wanted to add some humor. I wanted music with a sense of innocent abandon and mature angst.
Or vice-versa.”
Damage Control Damage follows Rainstick Cowbell’s 2011 sophomore album, Self, Assemble,
where “quirky, percussive guitar, unusual phrasings and some intense and rather personal
lyrics make for a special kind of campfire weirdness that definitely hits the spot,” Terrascope.
Rainstick Cowbell emerged in 2009 with the full-length album, fireants—“charged with anger
and passion, complemented by driving acoustic guitar arrangements… a refreshingly different
album that is worth a listen, ” Pophatmusic, and the 7” vinyl, Yeah, It Hurts.
Born in the lowlands of Mississippi and after a childhood in cities spanning the arc of the Gulf
of Mexico, Arbogast wandered across the country to set roots in Portland, Oregon. The vibrant
Northwest indie music scene—and nine months of crappy wet weather which encourages
rampant basement recording—provides fertile ground for the singer-songwriter whose musical
meanderings follow in the soul-worn path of such storytellers as M. Ward, Billy Bragg and
Woodie Guthrie.
“Rainstick Cowbell is an incredible mine of human emotions, especially pain, suffering and
anger which all, in the climax of the song, become a liberating catharsis… His persona is still
running, chasing, cursing and seeking. It is a tragic figure whose exploration is becoming a
passion for music fans.”
—BalconyTV Poznan, Poland [translated from Polish]
The 2012 European tour will take Rainstick Cowbell back into now-familiar territory from
Germany and Switzerland to Poland and Italy, where portions of Damage Control Damage were
recorded.
“The audiences [in Europe] are packed with great people and I’ve made some good friends,”
says Arbogast. “I relate to the troubadour history there, going from town to town, singing for my
supper. I could tour Europe forever.”
